Ministry of Sports-Funded Huwei Civic Sports Center Officially Opens on May 24, Establishing a New Sports Landmark in Yunlin
To create a diverse and friendly sports environment, Director Tsai Wen-Juan of the Department of Facility Planning of the Ministry of Sports (MOS) and Yunlin County Magistrate Chang Li-shan attended the opening ceremony of the “Huwei Civic Sports Center” in Yunlin County today. The affordable and professional facilities will provide local residents with a sports space free from weather interference.
Director Tsai stated that the Huwei Civic Sports Center is the second large-scale multifunction sports facility in Yunlin County following the opening of the Douliu City Civil Sports Center. It will not only serve residents of Huwei Township and the coastal areas of Yunlin, but also become the most important sports venue in the region. She added that the center provides an all-weather space for exercise and encouraged everyone to make full use of the facility, stay active, and enjoy the benefits of exercise with energy and vitality.
The exterior of the Huwei Civic Sports Center features a “tiger stripe” visual design. The total project cost is approximately NT$190 million, of which the MOS subsidized NT$100 million, with the remainder jointly provided by the county government and the township office. The facility is a three-story building covering nearly 2600 square metres, equipped with diverse, all-age sports facilities. Inside are a fitness center, aerobics studio, multipurpose classrooms, badminton courts, and table tennis rooms, as well as new types of classes such as Equipment Pilates, spinning, and aerial yoga.
After opening, the Huwei Civic Sports Center will become an important hub for health promotion and community interaction in the Huwei area of Yunlin. During public service hours, citizens aged 65 and above, as well as Indigenous people aged 55 and above, can enter free of charge with valid ID, which is expected to further promote a culture of sport for all in Yunlin County.
To implement the policy vision of “Strengthen Taiwan Through Sports,” the MOS continues to provide policy guidance and fully support local governments in building diverse and friendly public sports environments, offering comprehensive sports experiences, expanding the population engaged in sports, and enabling everyone to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of exercise.
The MOS emphasized that the opening of the Huwei Civic Sports Center reflects a facility-driven approach to sports development, encouraging people to stay active and make exercise a part of everyday life. Moving forward, the MOS will continue working with local governments to expand and enhance the sport-for-all facility network, enabling more people to invest in their health through public resources, strengthen community connections, and enjoy a high-quality sports environment and a healthier, happier life.
