Ministry of Sports Holds First Sports Sustainable Development Board Meeting Joining Hands to Build a New Vision of “Strengthening Taiwan Through Sports, Sustainability for the Future”
The Ministry of Sports (MOS) convened the first meeting of the Sports Sustainable Development Board on June 3, chaired by Deputy Convener and Political Deputy Minister of Sports Huang Chi-Huang. Representatives from the Ministry of Environment (MOENV), the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the Tourism Administration under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, as well as experts and scholars from related professional fields, serve as council members. The meeting officially launched Taiwan’s sports sustainable governance platform. Through interagency collaboration and public-private partnerships, the platform aims to promote public health, green sporting events, low-carbon sports facilities, and the sustainable development of the sports industry, while advancing the vision of “Strengthening Taiwan through sports” and the nation’s 2050 Net-Zero Transition goals.
Political Deputy Minister Huang stated that sustainable development is a global trend and that sports can play an important role in advancing environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and governance innovation. Since the establishment of the MOS, sports sustainability has been a key policy priority. In November 2025, the MOS signed the “Vibrant Sustainability: Memorandum of Understanding on Sports and Environmental Protection Cooperation” with the MOENV, establishing a cross-ministerial mechanism to promote sustainable sports facilities, green sporting events, talent development, environmental education, and international exchange under the vision of “Health Through Sports for All and Shared Environmental Sustainability.”
In the areas of public health and lifelong participation in sports, the Sports for All Agency under the MOS has implemented programs such as community sports clubs, all-age fitness programs, technology-assisted fitness assessments, and sports-friendly village and neighborhood certification. These efforts aim to build a comprehensive support system for sports participation across communities, schools, and workplaces, encouraging people of all ages to develop regular exercise habits and improve their health and quality of life.
To promote green sporting events, the MOS has introduced sustainability measures at major national competitions, including the National Middle School Athletic Games, National Intercollegiate Athletic Games, Citizens Sports Games, and National Indigenous Games. These measures include digital registration systems, paperless operations, waste-reduction and circular economy practices, and public transportation shuttle services. The MOS is also gradually establishing sustainability indicators and a classification system for sporting events to create a green sporting event model that combines environmental sustainability with local characteristics.
In addition, the MOS has begun establishing a nationwide low-carbon database for publicly owned sports facilities. This year, it plans to complete a survey of the current sustainability and carbon-reduction status of sports venues, develop low-carbon guidelines and carbon inventory operation manuals, and organize forums on low-carbon action strategies. These moves are intended to assist local governments and venue operators in implementing energy-saving and carbon-reduction measures while creating replicable and scalable models for low-carbon transformation.
The MOS emphasized that it will continue integrating cross-ministerial resources and stakeholder input to ensure the effective implementation of sports sustainability initiatives. Political Deputy Minister Huang further stressed that it will work closely with central and local governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and international partners to create a healthy, low-carbon, resilient, and inclusive sports environment. Sports can become a key driver of Taiwan’s sustainable development and help realize the vision of “Strengthening Taiwan through sports, Sustainability for the Future.”
